working artist statement

I investigate the figure considering it's breadth, both as an individual and as a part of humankind- as community and collective consciousness. The act of paint becomes essential to my inquiry, enabling me to actively engage with my subject matter and it’s psychological states, noting both sweeping gestures and subtle nuisances to develop mood through color and form. I dissect the figure finding understated shapes of color. With economy of paint(??) in mind, the environment I place my figure in, and often the figure itself, breaks down and gives a clue into my process of drawing and development.

I am infatuated with the notion of family and how shared experiences, whether positive or negative, breed strength and support. Through exploration of my own Jewish heritage, ritual and culture, I hope to expand on themes of mutual understanding, tragedy, and a collective unconscious. I paint restrained yet highly confrontational portraiture in attempts to monumentalize an individual, despite its anonymity within a group. It is man's capacity to exist in an eternal solitude while harboring the natural inclination towards cultural traditions and clustered associative communities and a love of process that drives the creation of this work.
